- About Guangzhou -

Guangzhou, affectionately known as “Yangcheng” or “the City of the Goat,” is a vibrant metropolis located in southern China, serving as the capital of Guangdong Province. This bustling city is not only a major economic hub but also a cultural melting pot that combines ancient traditions with modern innovations.

Founded over 2,200 years ago, Guangzhou boasts a rich historical heritage. Its strategic location by the Pearl River has made it a significant port since ancient times, facilitating trade and cultural exchange with regions as far as Southeast Asia, India, and beyond. Evidence of this historical significance can be found in landmarks such as the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, which showcases Cantonese architecture and art, and Shamian Island, a former foreign concession area now converted into a picturesque riverside district.

In terms of cuisine, Guangzhou is renowned for its Cantonese cuisine, which emphasizes fresh ingredients, delicate flavors, and elaborate preparation techniques. Dim sum, a selection of small steamed or fried snacks, is particularly famous here, with tea houses and restaurants serving up delicious bites like shrimp dumplings and rice noodle rolls.

The city’s economic prowess is evident in its bustling Tianhe District, home to the Guangzhou East Railway Station, the Canton Tower – one of the tallest towers in the world, and the Zhujiang New Town, a modern financial and business center. Guangzhou is also a hub for high-tech industries, fashion design, and international trade fairs, such as the Canton Fair, the largest and oldest trade fair in China.

Despite its rapid modernization, Guangzhou has successfully preserved its green spaces and natural beauty. The Baiyun Mountain, a lush green oasis within the city limits, offers hiking trails, scenic viewpoints, and a refreshing escape from urban hustle and bustle. The Pearl River Delta region, surrounding Guangzhou, is also famous for its lush landscapes and waterways, making it a popular destination for outdoor activities.
